Osa Peninsula Chronicles

A Costa Rica Rainforest, Wildlife, & Sea Turtles Conservation BLOG

This past Earth Day while our staff here on the Osa Peninsula were working with local students, planting seeds in our native tree nursery, and making preparations for the upcoming sea turtle nesting season, a group of authors across the United States were supporting conservation organizations around the world.

The students produced an information brochure about Friends of the Osa

Authors for Earth Day is a national coalition of authors that “supports conservation through literacy” and gives kids the power of voice to protect their future.  Brooke Bessesen, a friend and supporter of conservation, spent her Earth Day giving presentations at assemblies and to individual classes at Rhodes Junior High World Studies Academy in Mesa, Arizona, while a number of her colleagues did the same in other schools across the country.

Here’s how it works.  Brooke spent all day giving talks about conservation and its importance and then presented the students with 5 conservation organizations to research.  After their diligent investigations, the students took a paperless vote to select one conservation organization from the nominees and selected Friends of the Osa as the nonprofit conservation organization that they would like to support!

Vote for your favorite conservation organization

We received a generous $750 donation, the amount of Brooke’s speaking fee that will support the Sea Turtle Conservation Program in 2010.  This money will help us to expand the protection of sea turtles along the entire southern coast of the Osa Peninsula outside of Corcovado National Park, a whopping 18 km.  Perhaps someday in the future these same students will walk these beaches and behold the true impact of their votes as they watch the magic of a mother sea turtle laying her eggs that will ensure the survival of this ancient species.

Students want their donation to support Friends of the Osa's Sea Turtle Conservation Program
