Community Outreach, Land Conservation and Forest Restoration / 14.12.2012

In order to create public access stations for environmental education purposes, Osa Conservation recently built and inaugurated a 2.5-mile interpretive trail. In this easy journey, adventurers will find 23 stations labeled to help them understand and interpret the ecosystems, species and ecological associations that cross the path, which is a representation of the biological richness of the Osa Peninsula.

As part of conservation efforts for the Scarlet Macaw, artificial nests have been installed in two colleges and five schools. In each school, trees with easy visibility were chosen for students based on  characteristics of diameter and height for the installation of the nests. Students of these schools attended a workshop on ecology, life cycles and the importance of conservation of the species Ara macao. Students from the 5th, 6th, and 9th grades are in charge of monitoring macaw activities and noting events such as flights and perching near the nests and when a macaw investigates the inside of a nest. They also monitor the activity of other species near the nest.

Escrito por Pilar Bernal El 29 de Julio celebramos el Día Nacional de la Vida Silvestre en la comunidad de los Planes de Drake, con el tema: “Los Chanchos de Monte y Mi Comunidad." En el evento se dieron a conocer los ganadores de los concursos “Rastreadores de Fotografías” y la “Manta Estudiantil” Los participantes del concurso “Rastreadores de Fotografías” pertenecen a las comunidades de los Planes, Progreso, Los Ángeles y Drake, y son reconocidos por sus habilidades de cazadores. Ellos realizaron un recorrido de un día en diferentes senderos y usaron sus habilidades para rastrear manadas de chanchos de monte, huellas de felinos, dantas y otras especies de fauna silvestre. Los participantes iban acompañados de un fotógrafo profesional quien tomó fotografías del proceso de rastreo.
